12th Annual Yadkin Valley Pumpkin Festival
Make your plans now to attend the 12th Annual Yadkin Valley Pumpkin Festival, Saturday, September 27th, in Historic Downtown Elkin. The fun-packed day begins with the Third Annual Officially Sanctioned Yadkin Valley Great Pumpkin Weigh-Off, held at Smith Phillips Lumber Co on Standard Street. Check in time is 7:30 to 9:00 am with the weighing beginning at 9:00 am. Winning pumpkins will be displayed at Center Stage during the event Saturday. This is the only “Great Pumpkin Commonwealth” officially sanctioned weigh-off in the South East so expect to see pumpkins as large as 1,000 pounds. Visitors last year witnessed the weighing of the state record 1,178 lb pumpkin, grown by Sam Lovelace of Sparta, NC. This year’s contest will most certainly draw pumpkins that large or larger. Prizes will be given for First, Second, and Third places and entry forms are available at the Chamber of Commerce office, on their web-site (www.yadkinvalley.org), and from many Chamber member businesses. A special children’s class will be judged at 9:30 for trophies and ribbons. Again this year an official “3rd Annual Great Pumpkin Weigh-Off” tee-shirt has been created to commemorate this special event.
Festival events kick-off on Main Street bright and early at 8:45 with welcoming comments from Mayor Lestine Hutchens and the signing of our national anthem by Tristan Davis. Twenty food vendors and over seventy craft and demonstration vendors will line the streets of Historic Downtown Elkin with every thing imaginable for your shopping pleasure. From barbeque to biscuits and baked goods, hotdogs to fried candy bars, pizza to fried pies; the great food never ends. And of course, the main reason we have festivals – FUNNEL CAKES! On the street you’ll find crowd favorites like pumpkin and apple butter, ironworks and pottery, handmade crafts, wreaths, jewelry and woodworks, as well as a health screening fair, and a children’s area. Special this year will be the sale of our 2008 Yadkin Valley Pumpkin Festival shirt created by Elkin Middle School seventh grader Olivia West, this year’s winner of our yearly contest. During the day, you will be treated to music from 4-Wheel Drive, Blues DeVille, Rude Mood and RG Absher at Center Stage. Stage Two, in front of Reeves Theatre, will be home to Karate and Fencing demonstrations, a dance performance, a Pumpkin Pie Eating Contest, clogging and other special activities. Many downtown businesses will be having special events for the festival and it will be the last Farmer’s Market of the season. There is no better way to spend a good family oriented day than in Historic Downtown Elkin at the Yadkin Valley Pumpkin Festival.

Urban Archery Season Opens in Elkin
The Town of Elkin will participate in the NC Wildlife Resources Commission’s 2008-2009 bow hunting season in addition to the 2008-2009 Urban Archery Season. Rules and Regulations pertaining to this program can be found in the NC Regulations Digest available where hunting licenses are sold. This booklet can be viewed by visiting the NC Wildlife Resources Commission website at www.ncwildlife.org. On the left side of the home page, click on “regulations”; then click on “download the entire booklet here” to view information on hunting seasons. Bow Hunting Season is specifically addressed on pages 43 and 53 of this booklet. It is open inside the Elkin city limits with property owner permission during the normal bow hunting times for Surry County.
The Town of Elkin’s participation in bow hunting season does not obligate private landowners in Town to allow hunting on their property, nor does it eliminate the ethical requirements for hunters to obtain permission from landowners before hunting. It is entirely at the discretion of the property owner to allow or not allow anyone to hunt on their property. Each hunter must have a current, valid hunting license. Deer of either sex may be harvested. Any possession limits for both antlerless and antlered deer that apply to general bow and arrow season in Surry County apply to Elkin. Deer harvested during Bow Season must be registered via telephone (1-800-I GOT ONE) or online at www.ncwildlife.org. For more information, visit the NC Wildlife website or call 1-888-248-6834.
The Town of Elkin has not added any additional requirements to the regulations set forth by the State of NC. There are no additional permits, registration, certifications, etc. required by the Town. The Town does not keep a list of areas available for hunting, nor do we match hunters with property owners. The Town has chosen not to allow hunting on Town owned property. Listed below are various documents which you may find useful.
- read Town ordinance allowing “legal archery equipment” to be used inside the Town limits for the hunting of deer in accordance with the NC Wildlife Resource Commission’s regulations
- read Map of the Town of Elkin’s corporate limits (a more detailed map can be viewed during normal business hours, M-F, at Town Hall
